The Adriatic region is highly exposed to natural hazards, especially earthquakes. The eastern Adriatic Plate, our focus area, offers a unique opportunity to explore the causes of these risks.
DEFORM’s goal is to model plate deformation and geohazards using advanced technologies like digital imaging, seismotectonic analysis, and numerical simulations.
Through collaboration, workshops, and partnerships, we integrate real-world data into 3D models. Our work aims to improve geohazard understanding and risk assessment in the Adriatic region.
CENTRAL QUESTIONS
- Which processes led to the rotation of Adria?
- What is the current state of deformation of the Adriatic plate and its margins?
- How does deformation localize in particular at the transition between continental to oceanic subduction, and which hazard scenarios result from the different geodynamic scenarios?
Scientific Steering Committee
The Scientific Steering Committee oversees the strategic direction of the Priority Programme and ensures the quality and coherence of the research agenda. It is composed of leading researchers from participating institutions who represent the breadth of the programme’s scientific scope.
Committee members will be listed here shortly.
About the DFG
The DEFORM project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG, Deutsche Forschungs Gemeinschaft) as part of its Priority Programme (SPP, Schwerpunktprogramm) scheme. The DFG is Germany’s central self-governing research funding organization, supporting research across scientific disciplines.
Priority Programmes are a dedicated DFG funding instrument designed to advance research fields. Each programme brings together researchers from across Germany, and beyond, to collaborate on a shared scientific agenda over a funding period of up to six years.
Priority Programmes foster methodological exchange, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the development of a strong research community around a common set of questions.
Cooperation with the AdriaArray Initiative
Throughout SPP DEFORM, scientists will work closely with the AdriaArray initiative. AdriaArray is a multi-national effort to cover the Adriatic Plate and its active margins in the central Mediterranean by a dense regional array of seismic stations to understand the causes of active tectonics and volcanic fields in the region.
